Jim Turner: A Pioneer in Consumer Advocacy and Health Freedom
James S. “Jim” Turner (1940–2022) devoted his career to protecting consumers and advancing the principles of health freedom. As one of the original Nader’s Raiders, Turner worked alongside consumer advocate Ralph Nader during a period that dramatically changed public awareness of government accountability and consumer protection.
In 1970, Turner authored The Chemical Feast: Ralph Nader’s Study Group Report on the Food and Drug Administration, with an introduction by Ralph Nader. The groundbreaking publication criticized FDA oversight of food additives, pesticides, and pharmaceutical regulation. The book generated national attention, congressional hearings, and helped stimulate important public policy discussions concerning food safety and consumer protection.
Throughout his distinguished career, Turner authored and co-authored several influential books, including Making Your Own Baby Food, which sold more than one million copies, and Voice of the People: The Transpartisan Imperative in American Life, encouraging cooperation across political divides for the benefit of the American public.
Championing Dietary Supplements and Alternative Healthcare
Jim Turner became one of the nation’s leading advocates for consumer access to dietary supplements, homeopathy, acupuncture, naturopathic medicine, and other complementary healthcare practices.
As founder of the National Institute for Science, Law, and Public Policy (NISLAP) and later co-founder and Chairman of Citizens for Health, Turner worked tirelessly to ensure Americans maintained access to healthcare choices outside conventional medicine.
His leadership played an important role during passage of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994, legislation that continues to protect consumer access to dietary supplements today.
Turner also successfully challenged FDA classifications surrounding acupuncture needles, helping bring acupuncture into mainstream healthcare while expanding access and insurance recognition.
