Welcome to Greg Dwyer’s Podcast where we dive deep into practical strategies for personal growth and success. I’m your host, Greg Dwyer, and today, we’re talking about New Year’s Resolutions—but with a twist. Instead of the usual vague promises, we’ll explore how to categorize our goals for a more structured and sustainable path to improvement. Let’s turn those fleeting resolutions into lasting transformations.
Segment 1: The Resolution Trap As the New Year rolls in, many of us make resolutions with the best intentions. However, studies show that most resolutions fizzle out by mid-February. Why? Because they’re often too broad or lack a clear structure. We aim for “getting healthier” or “saving money,” but without a roadmap, these goals become daunting.
Segment 2: Categorizing Your Goals To break free from this cycle, I propose categorizing your resolutions into distinct areas of improvement. Think of it as creating a focused game plan for each aspect of your life. Here are a few categories to consider:
Health and Wellness: This could be about physical fitness, mental health, or nutritional goals. Instead of just saying, “I want to get fit,” break it down—commit to walking 10,000 steps a day or practicing mindfulness meditation three times a week.
Career and Professional Development: Focus on skills you want to acquire or milestones you aim to achieve in your career. Whether it’s enrolling in a course, improving public speaking, or expanding your professional network, make these goals actionable.
Financial Stability: Set clear financial targets like saving a specific amount each month, reducing debt, or investing in a retirement plan. Concrete numbers help track progress and keep you accountable. Relationships and Social Connections: Strengthening personal connections is often overlooked in resolutions. Aim to spend more quality time with family, reconnect with old friends, or meet new people.
Personal Growth and Hobbies: Whether it’s learning a new language, picking up a musical instrument, or reading more books, personal growth is crucial for a balanced life. Set tangible goals like reading one book per month or practicing a new skill weekly.
Segment 3: Creating SMART Goals Once you’ve categorized your resolutions, apply the SMART criteria—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This turns abstract ideas into clear, actionable steps. For example, instead of “I want to exercise more,” try “I will attend a yoga class twice a week for the next three months.”
Segment 4: Staying Accountable Accountability is key to sticking with your resolutions. Share your goals with a friend or join a group with similar objectives. Regular check-ins can keep you motivated and on track.
As we wrap up today’s episode, remember that lasting change doesn’t come from a single decision but from consistent, intentional actions. By categorizing your resolutions and setting SMART goals, you create a sustainable path to personal growth. Here’s to a year of meaningful improvement!
